Built in 1744 CE by Ahom king Pramatta Singha and later supported financially by King Rajeswar Singha in 1759, Sukreshwar Mandir stands as a significant spiritual destination in Guwahati. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features one of India's largest Shiva Lingas, drawing devotees throughout the day for darshan and aarti. According to legend, the temple marks the place where sage Sukra worshipped Lord Shiva, and the hillock is called Hastagiri due to its elephant-hump shape as mentioned in the Kalika Purana. The temple complex includes a Vishnu temple and multiple halls for conducting rituals and pujas. The embankment near the temple is considered sacred for ritual bathing, and performing post-death rituals here is believed to grant moksha. The architecture reflects Assamese style, and the temple attracts both Hindu and Buddhist devotees. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm annually.
