About Ratangarh Mata Temple

Ratangarh Mata Temple stands as a significant pilgrimage site in Datia district, Madhya Pradesh, nestled approximately 55 kilometers from Datia town and 5 kilometers from Rampura village. The temple complex comprises two main shrines: one dedicated to Mata Ratangarh Wali, an incarnation of Shakti, and another to Kunwar Maharaj, her brother. According to local tradition, Kunwar Maharaj possessed such spiritual power that poisonous creatures would release their venom in his presence; devotees bitten by venomous animals apply sacred bandages invoking his name, and seek his blessings on Bhai Dooj (the day after Diwali) for complete recovery. The temple gained historical prominence when Samarth Ramdas, spiritual guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji, arrived here in 1666 to orchestrate the Maratha emperor's escape from Mughal captivity in Agra Fort. Shivaji himself is credited with installing the temple's first bell and commissioning its renovation. The temple now houses a monumental bell weighing 1935 kilograms, crafted from nine metals by Gwalior artisan Prabhat Rai and installed on October 16, 2015, recognized as India's heaviest and most resonant temple bell. The annual Bhai Dooj fair attracts 25 to 30 lakh devotees who gather to honor the sibling bond between Mata and Kunwar Maharaj.
