About Nallur Sundara Varadharaja Perumal Temple

The Nallur Sundara Varadharaja Perumal Temple stands as a significant Vaishnava place of worship in the Nallur neighbourhood of Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity, Lord Sundara Varadaraja Perumal, is carved from a single stone and stands in the sanctum sanctorum holding a discus, conch, and staff. A distinctive feature of this temple is the placement of Garuda, the eagle vehicle of Lord Vishnu, positioned at the deity's feet in a worshipping posture—a rare architectural arrangement found in only a few temples. The shrine houses the consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi alongside the main deity. The temple is revered as a child-blessing sanctuary, with devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Perumal, known as Pillai Peru Nayakan. The Vilwa tree serves as the sacred tree of the temple, and a Yagna sala indicates the performance of numerous rituals historically. The presiding goddess Sundaravalli Thayar occupies a separate shrine, and additional shrines honour Sri Anjaneya, Sri Andal, Sri Vedanta Desika, and Sri Ramanuja.
