About Thinthirineesvarar Temple, Tindivanam

Located in Tindivanam, Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu, this traditional heritage temple is dedicated to Lord Thinthirineesvarar (Shiva). According to local tradition, the town's name derives from the sage Thindi who worshipped here, and the deity's name references the tamarind forests that once covered the region. The temple follows the Kamika Agama tradition and features a distinctive hexagonal sanctum with a single-tiered vimana. Architectural and historical studies place the temple's origins in the 10th century during the Chola period. The sacred tree associated with the temple is the Bilva tree. The shrine serves as an important place of worship for residents of Villupuram and surrounding areas, combining spiritual significance with ancient architectural heritage.
