Haleswar Temple stands as one of Assam's oldest places of worship, with origins traced to a sacred linga discovered by a farmer in the fields. The temple was formally reconstructed in 1705 CE under the patronage of King Rudra Singha of the Ahom dynasty. Constructed in the distinctive Nilachal architectural style, the temple uniquely serves as a shared sanctuary for followers of both Shiva and Vishnu, reflecting its syncretic spiritual significance. The site's name derives from Halowa, the colloquial term for the farmer who first unearthed the linga, establishing a direct connection between the temple's nomenclature and its legendary founding narrative.
