About Dirgheshwari temple

Dirgheshwari Temple stands as a revered Shakti Peetha shrine built with brick architecture featuring an underground cave chamber as its sanctum. The temple occupies a rocky hilltop along the Brahmaputra's northern banks and is believed to house the footprints of Goddess Durga. According to local tradition, it ranks as the second holiest site after Kamakhya Temple in the region. The temple's construction is documented through rock inscriptions crediting King Siva Singha and Viceroy Tarun Duwarah Barphukan. In 1756 CE, King Rajeswar Singha visited and granted lands along with a silver Japi, a ceremonial covering still used to adorn the deity's idol. The temple's spiritual prominence is enhanced by the legend of Sage Markandeya's intense penance at this location, resulting in divine blessings from the goddess. The annual Durga Puja celebrations draw devotees from distant places, making it the temple's main attraction.
