About Chausath Yogini Temple, Khajuraho

Built during the late 9th century, likely around 885 CE, the Chausath Yogini Temple stands as the oldest surviving structure at Khajuraho and one of the earliest Yogini temples in India. Constructed entirely from granite blocks on a high rectangular platform, the temple reflects the Shaktism tradition that revered the divine feminine principle. Originally housing sixty-four cells dedicated to yoginis—female attendants of the goddess—surrounding a central courtyard, the temple also contained one larger shrine for the primary deity, believed to be either Kali or Durga. Unlike other Yogini temples across India, this structure employs a distinctive rectangular plan while maintaining the hypaethral (open-air) characteristic typical of such sanctuaries. Today, only thirty-five of the original sixty-four cells remain intact. As part of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, the temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and is designated a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.
