Vandurai Nathar Temple

The temple complex is organized around a central sanctum with a three-tiered gopuram facing east. The mother deity's shrine faces south. Surrounding the main prakara (inner courtyard) are shrines to subsidiary deities and celestial figures: Vinayaka, Muruga, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma, Bhairava, Viswanatha, Bikshadana, and Chandikeswara, as well as shrines to the navagrahas (nine planets) and the sun and moon. Durga also has a dedicated shrine within the complex.

A notable architectural detail concerns the placement of Nandi, the bull vehicle of Shiva. Unlike the typical orientation, Nandi faces north from the front mandap (pavilion). This unusual positioning is explained by a story involving Nangai, a woman sage, who saw the ground as so sacred that she refused to place her feet upon it and instead worshipped facing north; the placement of Nandi honors this alternative orientation to the deity.

The temple operates on a daily schedule with morning darshan from 8:00 to 12:00 and evening darshan from 17:00 to 20:00. Devotees approach the temple with specific intentions: many seek resolution of delays and obstacles in their endeavors. Worship practices include abhisheka (ritual bathing of the deity) and the offering of vastras (cloth garments) to both the Lord and the Mother.

The temple is described as housing a swayambumurthy—a self-manifested form of the deity—which carries particular spiritual weight in Hindu tradition. Monthly pradosham observances (worship on the 13th lunar day) form part of the regular ritual calendar, drawing devotees who follow these lunar cycles of worship.
