Kottur Kozhundeeswarar Temple

The temple features a three-tiered Rajagopuram, or main tower, facing west. The structure incorporates two inner corridors, known as Prakaras, which allow devotees to circumambulate the sanctum. The sanctum itself follows a square design. Beyond the main shrine, the temple houses multiple subsidiary shrines dedicated to various deities and forms: Vinayaka, Muruga, Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Gajalakshmi, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, Akoraveerabadra, Nandikeswara, Vallaba Ganapathi, Nataraja, Brahma, Mahishasuramardini, Bhairava, the Navagrahas, and Chandikeswara. A separate shrine houses the Pradoshakala Murthy, representing the deity in the form worshipped during the auspicious Pradosha time (between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m.). The temple follows the Kamiya Agamam tradition in its ritual practices.

Daily Worship and Darshan

The temple opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 11:30 a.m. in the morning, reopening at 5:00 p.m. and closing at 8:30 p.m. in the evening. Six daily rituals, each featuring Naga Abharanam (serpent ornamentation), structure the day's worship: Ushakala Pooja at 7:00 a.m., Kala Sandhi Pooja at 10:00 a.m., Uchikala Pooja at 11:00 a.m., Sayarakshai Pooja at 5:30 p.m., Irandaam Kala Pooja at 7:30 p.m., and Ardha Jama Pooja at 8:30 p.m. Devotees typically perform abhishek (ritual bathing of the deity), archanas (flower offerings), and offer cloth garments as acts of devotion. On Masi Magam day (February-March), milk abhishek is performed, during which the Arthanareeswara form—representing the union of Shiva and Ambika—becomes visible on the Linga.

Festivals and Sacred Seasons

The temple celebrates four major festivals throughout the year. Vaikasi Visakam occurs in May-June, followed by Aadipooram in July-August. Navarathri, the nine-day festival honoring the divine feminine, takes place in September-October, and Karthikai is observed in November-December. These festivals draw devotees and mark significant moments in the temple's annual cycle of worship.
