Kottur Kozhundeeswarar Temple

According to temple tradition, the shrine's origins are connected to the deity Indra and a significant mythological event. When the demon Vruddhasura threatened the celestial realm, Indra sought protection from Brahma, who directed him to obtain the backbone of the sage Thatheesi. This bone, strengthened by the merged weapons of all the devas that the sage had safeguarded in his mouth during the churning of the cosmic ocean, became a powerful weapon. Indra successfully used it to defeat the demon but incurred the grave sin of brahmahatya—the killing of a brahmin—in the process. Advised by his guru to seek redemption through Shiva worship on earth, Indra discovered a self-manifested Shivalinga beneath a Vanni tree at this location and performed penance here.

The temple also preserves a narrative concerning the celestial dancer Ramba, who was cursed to descend to earth. According to tradition, she performed severe penance at this shrine, adopting a specific posture with her left leg pressed down and right leg bent, her hands positioned in a gesture of devotion, surrounded by fire, until her curse was lifted and she returned to the heavens.

Architecture and Layout

The temple's primary structure features a three-tiered Rajagopuram—the main tower—oriented toward the west. The sanctum itself is described as swayambu, meaning self-manifested. The temple complex includes two inner corridors, or prakara, providing circumambulatory paths for devotees. Beyond the main shrine, the temple houses numerous subsidiary shrines dedicated to various deities and aspects of the divine, including Vinayaka, Muruga, Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Gajalakshmi, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, Akoraveerabadra, Nandikeswara, Vallaba Ganapathi, Nataraja, Brahma, Mahishasuramardini, Bhairava, the Navagrahas, and Chandikeswara. A separate shrine houses the Pradoshakala Murthy, an idol representing the deity during the auspicious Pradosha period (between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. according to Hindu timekeeping).

Daily Worship and Rituals

The temple maintains a structured daily worship schedule centered on six principal rituals, each featuring Naga Abharanam—the ceremonial ornamentation of the deity with serpent imagery. The Ushakala Pooja begins at 7:00 a.m., followed by the Kala Sandhi Pooja at 10:00 a.m. and the Uchikala Pooja at 11:00 a.m. In the evening, the Sayarakshai Pooja occurs at 5:30 p.m., the Irandaam Kala Pooja at 7:30 p.m., and the Ardha Jama Pooja at 8:30 p.m.

Devotees engage in traditional acts of worship including abhishek (ritual bathing of the deity), archanas (flower offerings), and the presentation of cloth garments. A particularly significant observance occurs on Masi Magam, celebrated in February or March, when milk abhishek is performed. During this ritual, the Arthanareeswara form—representing Shiva and Ambica unified in a single aspect—becomes visible on the linga.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The temple celebrates four major festivals that mark important moments in the Hindu calendar. Vaikasi Visakam, observed in May or June, initiates the festival cycle. Aadipooram follows in July or August, while Navarathri is celebrated in September or October. Karthikai, the final major festival, occurs in November or December. Additionally, Masi Magam in February or March draws devotees for the special milk abhishek ritual. These festivals carry spiritual significance within the Shaivite tradition and attract pilgrims throughout the year.
