About Rajagopalaswamy Temple, Mannargudi

The Rajagopalaswamy Temple stands as a monumental Vaishnava sanctuary in Mannargudi, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu, encompassing 23 acres of sacred space. Constructed during the reign of Chola king Kulothunga I between 1072 and 1122 CE, the temple exemplifies Chola architectural excellence with 16 mandapams and 9 towers. The presiding deity is Rajagopalaswamy, a manifestation of Krishna, worshipped alongside his consort Sri Sengamala Thayar (Lakshmi). The temple follows Pancharatra Agama worship protocols and is administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department. Known by multiple epithets including Champakaranya Kshetram, Dakshina Dwaraka, Guruvayoor, Vanduvaraapathi, and Vasudevapuri, it holds paramount significance in Vaishnavite tradition as the foremost of the 108 Abhimana Kshetras. The annual Brahmotsavam festival in March–April (Panguni month) is the temple's most important celebration, drawing large crowds for its 10-day grand chariot festival.
