About Thiruthangur Vellimalainathar Temple

Located in Thiru Thangur village, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his manifestation as Vellimalainathar, with his consort Parvati known as Perianayaki. The temple is believed to be 1000–2000 years old and holds significance as the 116th Shiva temple on the southern bank of the Cauvery mentioned in the hymns of Saint Tirugnana Sambandar. According to local legend, after a great deluge, the nine planets installed individual Lingas on the banks of the Agashya River and performed penance for 1000 years, leading Lord Shiva to establish the cosmic order. The main deity is a Swayambumurthy (self-manifested form), and the temple complex contains Navagraha Lingas representing the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. The sacred tree is coconut, and the holy water is Sivagangai. The temple faces west, believed to confer greater mercy upon devotees.
