This temple, estimated to be 1000-2000 years old, enshrines Lord Shiva as Uchira Vaneswarar in a Swayambumurthy form, accompanied by Mother Veyuru Tholi Ammai who appears holding a discus and conch. The shrine is the 40th Shiva temple on the Cauvery's southern bank mentioned in sacred hymns. According to temple lore, the deity earned the epithet 'Thurai Kattum Vallalar' (Lord showing the bank of the river) when He revealed a safe passage to a devoted devotee named Arulvithan during a flood. The temple features a five-tiered Rajagopuram and two prakaras, with subsidiary shrines dedicated to Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma, Vinayaka, Bhairava, Somaskanda, Nataraja, Durga, Gajalakshmi, and planetary deities. The sacred tree Vizhal (a grass plant) grows within the temple grounds, where devotees seeking child blessings tie knots as an offering.
