About Swarnapureeswarar Temple, Sembanarkoil

Located in Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu, this historically significant temple dedicated to Lord Swarnapureeswarar dates to approximately the 9th century and holds deep spiritual importance in the Paadal Petra Shivasthalam tradition. The presiding deity, a Swayambhu Shiva lingam, rests upon a uniquely designed sixteen-petaled lotus Avudaiyar (pedestal). The temple's consort deity is Sugandha Kundalambikai, believed to be the eternal form of Dakshayani after her penance at this sacred site. The temple is renowned for a celestial phenomenon occurring during Chithirai month (April-May) when sunrays illuminate the presiding deity for twelve consecutive days, with a grand car festival called Soura Mahotsav celebrated on the ninth day. The site holds multiple historical names—Lakshmipuri, Indirapuri, and Gandhapuri—each commemorating divine episodes involving Lakshmi, Indra, and Muruga respectively. The temple was renovated by the Chola dynasty and remains a significant pilgrimage destination praised in Thevaram hymns by saints Tirugnana Sambandar and Tirunavukkarasar.
