About Veerateeswarar temple, Thirupariyalur
Located at Keelaparasalur in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu, this ancient Chola-period temple enshrines Lord Veerateeswarar (a form of Shiva) as its presiding deity, with Goddess Ilankombanaiyal as his consort. The temple is renowned as one of 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the Tevaram hymns by Nayanar saints including Tirugnanasambandar and Appar. It holds special significance as the fourth of the Ashta Veeratta Sthalams, commemorating the mythological episode where Lord Shiva created Veerabhadra to destroy Daksha's arrogant yajna after Goddess Sati's immolation. The temple features classic Dravidian architecture with a five-tier Rajagopuram, spacious granite prakarams, beautifully sculpted mandapams, and a distinctive shrine dedicated to Lord Veerabhadra. The presiding deity is considered a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested form). Additional shrines within the complex honor Vinayaka, Viswanatha, Bhairava, and the Sun God.
