About Neyyadiappar Temple
Located in Thillaisthanam village in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, this Shaivite shrine venerates Shiva in the form of Neyyadiappar, with his consort Parvati depicted as Piraisoodi Amman. The temple's most distinctive practice involves daily abhishek rituals performed with ghee followed by hot water, a tradition originating from a legendary account of a divine cow miraculously producing ghee at the site. The presiding deity is celebrated in the seventh-century Tevaram hymns composed by Shaiva saints Appar and Tirugnana Sambandar, and the temple ranks as the fifty-second Shiva sanctuary on the northern Cauvery bank praised in these sacred compositions. The temple complex features an east-facing rajagopuram with spacious first prakara, separate shrine for Ambica facing south, and inner sanctums dedicated to Vinayaka and Muruga, alongside representations of Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, and Brahamma on the goshta wall.
