Mallikarjuna Temple, Inavolu

The temple is dedicated to Mallikarjuna Swamy, a form of Lord Shiva. Within the sanctum, Shiva is represented in human form alongside his two consorts. This iconographic arrangement reflects a particular theological tradition within Shaivism where the divine is understood through the relationship between Shiva and the feminine divine principle.

Active worship continues at the temple, with poojas (ritual offerings) still being performed according to traditional practice. The ongoing ritual life of the temple means that visitors may encounter active worship during their visit, particularly during the morning and evening darshan periods.

Visiting Information

The temple is open for darshan during two periods: morning from 06:00 to 12:00 and evening from 16:00 to 19:00. These timings allow flexibility for both early morning visits and evening worship, which are common practices among Hindu devotees.

Inavolu village is located approximately 18 kilometres from Warangal city. To reach the temple by road, travel towards the Khammam highway for 11 kilometres from Warangal, where a prominent arch entrance marks the temple's direction. From this arch, turn right and continue for 7 kilometres to reach Inavolu village. Public buses heading towards Khammam stop at the arch entrance, and auto-rickshaws are available from this point to transport visitors to the temple. Private vehicles and taxis are also viable options for the journey.

Practical Considerations for Visitors

Visitors should plan their trip to align with the temple's open hours, keeping in mind that the midday closure (12:00–16:00) is a significant break. Modest dress is appropriate when visiting Hindu temples; loose-fitting clothing that covers shoulders and knees is customary. Shoes are typically removed before entering the inner sanctum, though shoe storage facilities are usually available.

The temple complex is maintained by the archaeological department, which means the site is preserved as both an active place of worship and a historical monument. Visitors should be respectful of ongoing rituals and the devotional activities of other worshippers. Photography policies may vary; it is advisable to observe what other visitors are doing or to ask temple staff before photographing the interior sanctum or active worship.

Getting There

The journey from Warangal takes approximately one hour including travel time. The marked arch entrance on the Khammam highway serves as a clear landmark and stopping point for public transport. From this point, the final 7-kilometre stretch to Inavolu can be covered by auto-rickshaw or private vehicle. Those travelling by public bus should note that services run regularly on the Warangal–Khammam route, making this temple accessible without private transport.
