Kalika Mata Temple
About Kalika Mata Temple
Kalika Mata Temple, also known as Mahakali Mata Temple, crowns Pavagadh Hill in Panchmahal District, approximately 46 kilometers from Vadodara. Revered as one of Gujarat's three principal Shaktipeeths alongside Ambaji and Bahucharaji, the shrine is believed to have been established thousands of years ago during the Treta and Dvapara Yugas. The goddess is worshipped as Jagat Janani Maa Kalika Devi, the eternal manifestation of Adya Vidya and Brahmaswarupini. The temple complex lies within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The site is situated in a tribal area predominantly inhabited by the Rathwas community. In June 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the temple flag after a 500-year interval, marking a significant restoration. The temple attracts pilgrims throughout the year, with particularly large gatherings during Navratri celebrations.
