About Gopinatha Perumal Temple

Situated in the sacred town of Chidambaram, the Govindaraja Perumal Temple stands as an integral part of the larger Thillai Nataraja Temple premises. The presiding deity is Govindaraja Perumal, an incarnation of Vishnu, accompanied by his consort Pundarikavalli Thayar (Lakshmi). The temple exemplifies Dravidian architectural principles and holds significant religious importance as one of the 108 Divya Desams, the most sacred Vishnu temples in Hindu tradition. Its spiritual legacy extends back to the early medieval period, when it was venerated by the Alvar saints whose compositions form part of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, a foundational text of Tamil Vaishnavism dating from the 6th to 9th centuries CE.
