Situated atop Bijayapur Hill approximately three kilometers from Dharan city center, Dantakali Temple stands as one of Nepal's most spiritually significant Hindu shrines. The temple's name derives from Sanskrit—'danta' meaning tooth and 'kali' referring to the fierce divine feminine—commemorating the mythological event when Sati's tooth fell at this location as Shiva carried her remains across the cosmos following her self-immolation. The structure exemplifies humble hill-temple architecture with stone construction, traditional woodwork, and a multi-tiered roof, featuring a steep staircase with railings that ascends to panoramic vistas of Dharan city and the Terai plains. Rather than housing a conventional idol, the inner sanctum contains a symbolic representation of Sati's sacred tooth, emphasizing the abstract power of Shakti. The temple draws particularly large congregations during Dashain and Navaratri festivals, when elaborate rituals, animal offerings, and tantric chants animate the sacred space.
