About Viratra Vankal Mata Temple

Located in Chohtan, Barmer district of Rajasthan, Viratra Vankal Mata Temple stands on a hilltop called Viratra approximately 55 kilometers from the Barmer district headquarters. The deity, Vankal Mata, is revered as a manifestation of Goddess Durga. According to local tradition, the temple's origins trace to King Vikramaditya of Ujjain, who sought the goddess's blessings during his campaigns. Legend holds that the goddess's power seat was established at this location when Vikramaditya turned back during his journey, fulfilling a divine prophecy. The goddess is known as Vankal Mata because of her tilted neck, with 'Vankal' referring to this distinctive feature. The temple attracts pilgrims not only from Barmer but from throughout India, drawn by the miracles and spiritual significance associated with the shrine.
