About Tirupalli Mukkudal Tirunethranathar Temple

This ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands at Tirupalli Mukkudal in Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, in a place historically known as Kekkarai. The presiding deity, Tirunethranathar or Mukkona Nathar, is worshipped alongside his consort Parvati, known as Mayilmevum Kanni or Anjakshi. The temple holds significance as one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, shrines glorified in the Thevaram hymns composed by the Nayanar saint Tirunavukkarasar. According to temple lore, the sacred tank called Mukkudal Theertham was dug by Lord Vinayaka and is considered equivalent to bathing in sixteen sacred confluence sites. The temple is also associated with the mythological narrative of Jatayu from the Ramayana, who performed penance here seeking Lord Shiva's grace. A distinctive feature occurs on Masi Shivrathri in February-March when rays of the sun fall directly upon the presiding deity. The Sthala Vriksham (sacred tree) is the Vilwa tree.
