About Thyagaraja Temple, Tiruvarur

The Arulmigu Thyagaraja Swamy Temple stands as one of Tamil Nadu's most significant Shiva temples, with its presiding deity worshipped as Thyagarajaswami or Putridankondar in the form of a lingam. The goddess Parvati is venerated as Neelotpalambika, while Kamalambika has a separate shrine recognized as one of the Shakti Peethas and an important center for Shaktism and Tantra practices. Originally established by the Pallavas in the 7th century, the temple's present stone structure was constructed during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century, with further embellishments added by Vijayanagara rulers between the 14th and 16th centuries. The temple complex encompasses nine gopurams and covers more than 30 acres, housing 365 sacred lingams symbolizing each day of the year. The massive chariot, standing 90 feet high and weighing 300 tons, is considered among Asia's largest. The shrine is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, having been revered in the 7th-century Tevaram, the canonical Shaiva work composed by the Nayanar saint poets.
