Thoovanayanar Thoovainathar Temple

The temple holds particular importance in the life of Saint Sundarar, one of the Nayanmar saints of the Saivite Trinity. Sundarar undertook a pilgrimage to Shiva temples seeking restoration of his eyesight after losing his vision. At this temple in Tiruvarur, he performed ritual bathing in the tank located at the southeast corner and offered prayers to the Lord. Through this act of devotion, he regained the sight of his right eye. During abhisheka (ritual bathing of the deity), devotees report observing an eye symbol on the Lord's form, said to commemorate this blessing granted to Sundarar.

According to temple tradition, when catastrophic tidal waves threatened destruction, Sage Durvasa and other sages appealed to Lord Shiva for protection.
