According to temple tradition, the shrine's history involves the sage Agasthya, who is said to have worshipped the deity in the form of a Salagarama (a sacred stone). When Agasthya departed northward, he placed this stone in the Pushkarani (sacred tank) at Thirumala. A bather later retrieved the stone and chose to install it at the southern location where the temple now stands. A Chola king subsequently established the temple at this site. The name Pulivalam itself derives from another local narrative: a sage cursed by Narada to take tiger form is said to have been freed from this curse by circumambulating the temple, leading to the place being called Pulivalam—the tiger's sacred space. The temple also holds a connection to Sri Muthuswami Deekshithar, the celebrated composer of Carnatic music, who is said to have composed a kruti (a complex musical form) dedicated to the deity here.
