Thiruvairur Mahadeva Temple
About Thiruvairur Mahadeva Temple
According to tradition preserved at the temple, an elderly Namboodiri Brahmin from Sreemoolanagaram once faced difficulty crossing the Periyar River to reach a distant Shiva temple at Iranikkulam for his daily worship. Akavoor Chathan, a figure from the Parayi Petta Pantheerukulam tradition, assisted him by fashioning a boat from light granite. During their return journey, the Brahmin noticed his umbrella had grown unusually heavy. Upon inspection, the stone itself appeared to be bleeding. A woman nearby, witnessing this, fled in panic across the surrounding land. That land was subsequently granted to temple authorities and became the site of the present shrine, where Lord Mahadeva—said to have traveled within the stone from Airanikkulathappan—was enshrined. The location thus acquired its name, Thiruvairanikulam.
Daily Worship and Darshan
The temple maintains regular worship schedules throughout the year. Morning darshan at the Shiva shrine runs from 4:30 AM to 11:00 AM, accommodating early risers and those following traditional practice. Evening darshan extends from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM. An evening lamp offering ritual, the Deeparadhana, occurs at 6:30 PM and holds particular spiritual significance within the temple's practice; devotees believe witnessing this lamp offering brings divine protection.
Devotees may make various offerings including flower garlands, oil, ghee, and flowers. More elaborate rituals such as the Mrityunjaya Homam are available for those seeking specific blessings related to health and longevity. During the twelve-day Nadathurappu Mahotsavam festival, darshan hours expand: morning access runs from 4:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and evening hours extend from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, allowing extended opportunity to worship the Goddess.
The Nadathurappu Mahotsavam Festival
The Nadathurappu Mahotsavam, observed over twelve days beginning in mid-December to mid-January, marks the annual opening of Goddess Parvati's sanctum. This festival draws increased numbers of worshippers and represents the primary occasion for devotees to seek the Goddess's darshan. The temple is notably decorated during this period, and the expanded darshan hours reflect the heightened religious significance of these days. Shivaratri, the night dedicated to Lord Shiva, also represents an important observance at the temple, drawing devotees for extended worship and meditation.

Nedumbassery International Airport serves as the nearest major air terminal for those traveling by flight. From there, ground transportation can be arranged to reach the temple in Alangad. The temple's location within a village setting means that private vehicle hire or taxi services may be more practical than public transport for the final leg of the journey.
