About Chettikulangara Devi Temple

Located approximately 4 kilometres west of Mavelikkara in Alappuzha district, Chettikulangara Devi Temple enshrines Sree Bhadrakali, the fierce manifestation of the supreme mother Shakti born from Lord Shiva's third eye to vanquish the demon king Daruka. The name Bhadrakali combines 'Bhadra' (good) and 'Kali' (goddess of time), reflecting the deity's role as protector and destroyer. According to temple tradition, the shrine was consecrated by Padmapadacharyar, a principal disciple of Adi Shankara, on the Uthrittathi day of Makara month in 823 CE, though definitive historical documentation remains limited. The temple serves as one of five sacred Ambalayams established during Kerala's legendary genesis period and is recognized as a religio-cultural icon of the region, hosting major festivals including Kumbha Bharani, Kettukazhcha, and Kuthiyottam offerings.
