Sree Krishna Swami Temple, Mavelikkara
About Sree Krishna Swami Temple, Mavelikkara
The temple's founding is rooted in a discovery made by a servant of the Idaserry Family who was devoted to Krishna. While clearing land, he found a statue that had been damaged and was bleeding from the wound. The statue was brought to the family, and astrological consultation confirmed it represented Lord Krishna in the act of taking butter—a beloved episode in Krishna's mythology. With support from the king of Matathinkore, a temple was constructed to properly house the idol. The installation ceremony was performed by Kulakkada Nampimatthham Pandaram, a specialist in tantric rituals. The servant who discovered the statue was honored with the title Kerala Adichan and granted tax-free land and a house; his descendants became known as the Ooralaserry family.
The temple's architecture reflects careful craftsmanship and traditional Kerala temple design. The sanctum sanctorum features a copper roof, while the anecdotal (pillared hall), velakulam (temple tank), and compound wall are distinctive structural elements. The temple was later renovated into its present form at the request of the Mavelikara Palace, which assumed community ownership after ceding the Puthiyakavu Devi Temple to the Idaserry Family.
Festivals and Observances
The most significant festival at the temple is Ashtami Rohini Maholsavam, celebrated during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September). This grand festival features the Sobhayatra, a colorful procession that showcases traditional art forms, music, and dance. The Uriyadi Thiruvabharana Charthu ceremony is also central to the celebration, involving the ritual adorning of the deity with ornaments performed with considerable splendor.
Beyond the main festival, the temple hosts Bhagavatha Sapthaha Yajnyam, a seven-day ritualistic observance dedicated to the recitation of the Bhagavata Purana. During this event, learned scholars and priests chant verses from this sacred text continuously over seven days, accompanied by rituals and offerings. Devotees gather to listen with devotion, believing the recitations bring spiritual enlightenment and divine blessings.
