About Thanumalayan Temple

Located in Suchindram, Kanyakumari district, the Thanumalayan Temple stands as a testament to South Indian architectural and spiritual heritage. The temple's name derives from the Trimurti concept: Stanu (Shiva), Mal (Vishnu), and Ayan (Brahma), representing the unity of Hindu philosophical traditions. The present masonry structure dates to the 9th century during the Chola dynasty, with subsequent expansions by Thirumalai Nayak and Travancore Maharajas. The temple complex spans approximately two acres and features a striking 40-meter-tall eastern gopuram with seven storeys, intricately carved with deities and mythological scenes. Notable features include musical pillars that produce harmonious tones when struck, a 22-foot statue of Lord Hanuman, and an imposing Nandi. The temple hosts significant annual celebrations including Rathotsavam and the Theppam Festival, drawing thousands of devotees.
