About Nagaraja Temple, Nagercoil

Located at the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, Nagaraja Temple is a significant center for serpent worship in Hindu tradition. The main sanctum honors Nagaraja, with Vasuki—Lord Shiva's serpent—being the primary deity worshipped here. According to temple lore, a devoted Namboothiri received a sacred idol of the five-headed Nagaraja after curing a Pandya king's ailment, and established worship at this site. The temple complex has expanded since the 17th century to include shrines dedicated to Maha Vishnu, Shiva, Rukmini, Satyabhama, Ganapathi, Durga, and Bala Murugan. Devotees visit seeking relief from Nagadosha (serpent curses), fertility blessings, and resolution of marriage obstacles, particularly during the auspicious Ayilyam festival in October-November.
