About Teru Malleshvara Temple, Hiriyur
Built around 1466 CE during the Vijayanagara Empire, this temple showcases Dravidian architecture with a five-tiered rajagopuram on its southern side constructed by Medakari Nayaka II. The temple complex comprises a sanctum, antrala, navaranga, and mukha mandapa, with the mukha mantapa ceiling adorned with murals depicting scenes from the Shivapurana and Ramayana. The presiding deity, Teru Malleshwara, is enshrined as a Linga in the sanctum. According to local legend, a devoted follower named Belavadi Hema Reddy Mallamma worshipped a cylindrical grinding stone (Oralukallu) after Lord Shiva appeared in her dreams, assuring her that his presence would manifest in Hiriyur. The temple is protected as a monument under the Karnataka state division of the Archaeological Survey of India and hosts the annual Teru Malleshvara Jatra festival.
