About Tarakeshwara Temple, Hangal

Nestled in Hangal, Karnataka, the Tarakeshwara Temple stands as a masterpiece of Western Chalukya architecture from the 10th–12th centuries, though its origins trace to the 5th century during the Kadamba dynasty. The temple's sanctum houses a sacred Shiva Linga and is accompanied by shrines dedicated to Nandi, Shiva's vahana, and Ganesha, his son. The complex is celebrated for the 'Lotus of Hangal'—a remarkable 6-metre diameter stone lotus carved as the ceiling of an octagonal hall, supported by eight intricately sculpted pillars depicting the Ashtadikpalakas or Guardians of the Eight Directions. The temple showcases a harmonious fusion of Dravidian and Nagara architectural elements, with miniature shikharas adorning its outer walls and profuse religious sculptures. Three memorial stones inscribed in Kannada language and carved with religious and military scenes add to its historical significance. Designated as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple remains a spiritual and cultural landmark reflecting the artistic genius of Karnataka's ancient dynasties.
