This sacred Saiva temple, located in Tiruvidaivasal village near the Vennar bridge, enshrines Lord Shiva in his manifestation as Punniyakodiyappar (also called Idaivainathar), meaning 'the Lord who grants spiritual merit.' The presiding deity's consort is Goddess Abiramani (Parvati). The temple holds significant place in Tamil religious tradition as one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, with Tevaram verses composed by Thirugnanasambandar and references by Ayyadigal Kadavarkon. The temple's Tevaram hymns were rediscovered in 1917, reaffirming its ancient sanctity. Historically patronized by Chola kings, particularly Kulothunga Chola I in the 11th century, the temple reflects Chola-era architectural traditions with its Dravidian design, carved pillars, and inscribed sanctum walls. The complex includes subsidiary shrines dedicated to Ganesha, Murugan, and the Navagrahas. Daily worship follows Saiva Agama rituals including four Kaala Poojas (Kalasanthi, Uchikalam, Sayarakshai, and Ardha Jamam), abhishekam ceremonies with sacred substances, and deepa aradhana with Vedic chanting.
