About Purvesvara Siva Temple
Located in Kancha Sahi, the Old Town of Bhubaneswar, Purvesvara Siva Temple was constructed during the 13th century AD in the mature phase of Orissa temple architecture. The temple's name derives from its eastern position relative to the nearby Lingaraja Temple, with the presiding deity known as Purvesvara. The sanctum contains a broken Shivalinga set within a circular Yonipitha, positioned 1.07 metres below the current ground level. The original structure featured a pancharatha vimana and navaratha jagamohana, though the vimana's superstructure has since collapsed, leaving only the pabhaga portion and a renovated jagamohana with a sheet roof. The temple measures approximately 15 metres in length and 7.2 metres in width, standing on a partially buried pista. Devotees gather during significant occasions including Sivaratri, Makra Sankranti, and Rudraviseka. The temple is currently managed by the Purvesvara Temple Development Association under state government oversight.
