Rajarani Temple stands as a masterpiece of Kalinga architectural style, constructed during the reign of Indraratha of the Somavamsi dynasty in the 11th century. Originally known as Indreswara Temple, it acquired its present name from the local term 'Rajarani' referring to the red and yellow sandstone used in its construction. The temple features a Pancharatha design built on a three-molded platform, comprising a Jagamohana with pyramidal roof and a Vimana with a curvilinear shikhara rising 17.9 meters. Though lacking a presiding deity in the sanctum sanctorum, figures of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the platform indicate its Shaivite associations. The shrine is renowned for its exquisite sculptural ornamentation depicting couples and celestial figures, earning it the epithet 'Love Temple.' The structure underwent significant renovation in 1903 and is currently maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple hosts the annual Rajarani Music Festival each January-February, showcasing Indian classical music traditions.
