About Ananta Basudeva Temple
Built by Queen Chandrika Devi of the Eastern Ganga dynasty in the 13th century, Ananta Vasudeva Temple stands as one of Bhubaneswar's most significant Vaishnavite sanctuaries, offering a spiritual counterpoint to the city's predominantly Shaivite temples. The shrine underwent renovation in the late 17th century by the Marathas and continues to serve as an active center of devotion. The temple showcases exquisite Kalinga architecture with intricately carved pillars, walls, and a gopuram depicting Vaishnavite scriptures and mythological narratives. The main sanctum houses black granite idols of Lord Balarama beneath a seven-hooded serpent, Lord Krishna holding conch, mace, and chakra, and Goddess Shubhadra with pot and lotus. The temple's distinctive feature is its traditional kitchen where Abhada (Mahaprasad) is prepared in earthen pots using firewood, then offered to deities before distribution at the adjoining Bhoga Bazaar, mirroring the sacred food traditions of Puri's Jagannath Temple.
