Ponmeri Shiva Temple
About Ponmeri Shiva Temple
Located approximately 53 kilometers from Kozhikode Railway Station near Villiapally, Ponmeri Shiva Temple stands as one of Kerala's oldest Shiva temples. The shrine showcases traditional Kerala architectural design featuring exquisite wooden and stone carvings, along with paintings depicting the churning of the ocean of milk from Hindu mythology. Beyond its primary dedication to Lord Shiva, the temple complex houses a distinctive sub-temple devoted to Lord Brahma, a rare occurrence in Hindu temple worship. The temple also enshrines multiple deities including Vishnu, Ganapati, Bhagavathi, Shankaranarayana, Aditya, Boothathevar, Ayyappa, Murugan, and Krishna, making it a significant spiritual center. The main festival, Ponmeri Utsavam, features Ottam Thullal as its primary attraction, while the temple also conducts important rituals such as Navagraha Homam and Maha Mrityunjaya Homam.
