Neyveli Natarajar Temple
About Neyveli Natarajar Temple
The temple's origins rest in tradition, with local accounts placing its establishment five hundred years in the past. However, the current structure was constructed between 1986 and 1987. Following the temple's completion, the surrounding area was named Sivapuram. The temple is administered by the Panniru Tirumurai Valarchi Kazhagam, with additional community support provided by the Naalvar Narpani Mandram organisation.
The Sixty-Three Nayanmars: Saints in Stone
A defining feature of this temple is its comprehensive honoring of the Nayanmars—the sixty-three Saivite saints whose devotion to Shiva forms a cornerstone of Tamil religious literature. Rather than depicting these saints collectively in a single row as is common in many Shiva temples, Neyveli Natarajar Temple has installed each of the Nayanmars in separate shrines, each crowned with nine kalasas (ritual vessels). This arrangement reflects the temple's conviction that individual saints deserve distinct reverence and recognition.
Devotees often select the Nayanmars corresponding to their birth star and offer special archanas (ritual prayers) to seek the fulfilment of their wishes. The temple observes the Guru Puja days of the four principal Nayanmars—Appar, Gnanasambandar, Sundarar, and Manickavasagar—with processions of the divine parents in a small rath-car through the temple grounds. These occasions include lectures on the lives and teachings of the saints. Beyond these four, the temple conducts special pujas with processions on the Guru Puja days of all sixty-three Nayanmars throughout the year, allowing devotees to participate in thanksgiving and prayer aligned with their chosen saint.
Daily Worship and Darshan
The temple opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 12:00 noon, reopening at 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Six daily pujas structure the worship: Thirupalliyezhuchi Pooja at 6:00 a.m., Kala Santhi Pooja at 12:00 noon, Uchikala Pooja at 12:30 p.m., Sayaratchai Pooja at 4:00 p.m., Irandam Kala Pooja at 6:00 p.m., and Arthajama Pooja at 9:00 p.m.
Mondays hold particular significance in the temple's rhythm. An assembly prayer is conducted each Monday at 5:30 p.m., followed by the distribution of prasad to those seeking healing. The temple also maintains a meditation hall (Dyan mandap) where visitors may sit in quiet contemplation. Those training for Natyanjali competitions at Chidambaram often visit to offer special archanas to Nataraja, seeking his blessings for their artistic endeavours.
Festivals and Auspicious Days
Chithirai, the Tamil month corresponding roughly to mid-April, brings the temple's most significant observance. On the first day of Chithirai (falling near April 14, though the exact date varies yearly), Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi process in a small rath-car accompanied by representations of all sixty-three Nayanmars. The Guru Puja days of the four principal saints—Appar, Gnanasambandar, Sundarar, and Manickavasagar—also draw devotees for processions and darshan in the temple's outer courtyard.
Beyond these occasions, Mondays, Pradosham (the monthly observance honouring Shiva), Maha Shivaratri, Arudra Darshan, Ani Thirumanjanam, and Karthigai Deepam are recognised as spiritually significant days for worship at this temple.
