The Marikamba Temple stands in the center of Sagara in Shimoga district, dedicated to Goddess Marikamba Devi, a manifestation of Goddess Parvathi. Built during the 16th century under Venkatappa Nayaka's rule over the Keladi and Ikkeri kingdom, the temple holds deep historical significance as the family deity shrine of the Nayaka dynasty. According to legend, Saint Adi Shankaracharya visited Sagara and was instructed by the Goddess in a dream to establish a temple at this location. The Goddess's footprints were initially consecrated at the city's outskirts before Venkatappa Nayaka, seeking divine blessings for victory in battle, relocated them to a central location and constructed the present temple. The shrine attracts devotees throughout the day for darshan and aarti, with special significance during the triennial Marikamba Jathra festival held in February, featuring a 16-foot decorated chariot procession.
