Maharani Temple
About Maharani Temple
The temple was established in 1831 by a Hindu merchant named Dhakji Dadaji. According to tradition, the idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi was discovered in the sea during the construction of the Hornby Vellard, the causeway now known as Haji Ali. This discovery is said to have marked the sacred origin of the temple, which has since become a cornerstone of spiritual life in Mumbai for nearly two centuries.
The temple's location on Bhulabhai Desai Road in the Mahalaxmi neighbourhood of Mumbai places it at the heart of the city's religious landscape.
Daily Darshan and Aarti Schedule
The temple opens for darshan from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, allowing devotees flexible access throughout the day. Four formal aarti ceremonies are performed daily. The morning aarti begins at 6:45 AM, marking the first prayers of the day. At 11:45 AM, the Naivedya ceremony takes place—a sacred food offering to the deities. Two evening aartis follow: the Dhoop Aarti at 6:15 PM, performed with incense and lamps, and the closing aarti at 7:20 PM. During these aarti times, the temple is closed for general darshan as the priests conduct the rituals.
Visitors should plan their visit around these schedules if they wish to witness the ceremonies or prefer uninterrupted darshan time.
Festivals and Celebrations
The temple observes three major festivals throughout the year. Sharad Navratri, celebrated in September or October, is the grandest occasion at the temple, with nine nights of devotion and worship that draw large numbers of devotees from across India. Diwali, falling in October or November, holds particular significance here as the festival of lights and the occasion for Lakshmi Poojan—worship of the goddess for wealth and prosperity—performed on the new moon night. Akshaya Tritiya, celebrated in April or May, is observed as an auspicious day for new beginnings and investments, when devotees seek the goddess's blessings for unending prosperity.
Visitor Information and Guidelines
The temple is located at Shri Mahalakshmi Temple Trust, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, Maharashtra. For inquiries, visitors can contact the temple at 022-2351 4732. The temple maintains a website with additional information and the option to book pujas or make donations online.
Visitors should dress modestly and respectfully when entering the temple, as is customary at Hindu places of worship. Shoes are typically removed before entering the sanctum. The temple provides facilities for darshan and puja bookings, allowing devotees to arrange personalized worship services if desired.
Best Times to Visit
While the temple welcomes visitors year-round, certain periods offer particularly vibrant spiritual experiences. Navratri in September or October brings grand celebrations and heightened devotional energy. Diwali season in October or November is significant for those wishing to participate in Lakshmi Poojan. Akshaya Tritiya in April or May attracts those seeking blessings for auspicious new ventures. Outside these festivals, visiting during the morning aarti at 6:45 AM or the evening aartis provides an opportunity to witness the formal worship ceremonies and experience the temple's spiritual atmosphere.
