Kheer Bhawani Temple
About Kheer Bhawani Temple
The Kheer Bhawani Temple, also known as the Ragnya Devi Temple, is constructed over a sacred spring in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. The goddess is worshipped under multiple names including Ragnya, Rajna, and Kheer Bhawani, with 'kheer' referring to the milk and rice pudding traditionally offered as prasad. The temple holds profound significance for Kashmiri Pandits, who revere the goddess as their protective Kuldevi or family deity. The marble temple complex, surrounded by magnificent Chinar trees, features a distinctive hexagonal sacred pool whose water is believed to change color. The temple's spiritual importance is underscored by its mention in ancient texts like the Rajatarangini, and it gained further prominence through Swami Vivekananda's visit in 1898, during which he reportedly experienced a profound spiritual awakening.
