This expansive sacred complex dedicated to Lord Shiva stands approximately nine kilometers from Kumbakonam in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity, Mahalingeswaraswamy, is represented by a self-manifested lingam called Jyothirmayalingam. The temple's architectural grandeur is defined by three concentric prakarams: the outermost Ashwamedha Prakaram, the middle Kodumudi Prakaram, and the innermost Pranava Prakaram believed to grant Moksha. The complex includes five Shiva temples arranged in a Pancha Linga Kshetram pattern, with the central Mahalingaswamy temple surrounded by four cardinal temples. The presiding deity is revered in the seventh-century Tamil Saiva canonical work Tevaram and praised by ninth-century saint poet Manikkavacakar. The present masonry structure was constructed during the ninth-century Chola dynasty with subsequent expansions by the Thanjavur Nayaks in the sixteenth century.
