About Lakhamandal temple, ruins and images

Lakhamandal temple stands as a sacred sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated at 1,370 meters altitude on the banks of the Yamuna River in Dehradun district. The temple complex derives its name from 'Lakha' (meaning one lakh or 100,000) and 'mandal' (temple), referencing the enormous number of Shiva lingas that once adorned the site. Built in the Nagara architectural style characteristic of Garhwal and Himachal Pradesh hill regions, the temple displays evidence of construction spanning from the 5th-8th century BCE through the 12th-13th century CE. According to Mahabharata legend, this is the location where the Kauravas constructed the 'house of lac' to immolate the Pandavas, though the brothers escaped through a secret tunnel. The site remains protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance, with the main attraction being a graphite stone lingam that shines and reflects its surroundings when water is offered to it.
