Surkanda Devi
About Surkanda Devi
Until recently, all visitors faced a mandatory 1.5-kilometre uphill trek from Kaddukhal village to reach the shrine. A ropeway service, inaugurated by Uttarakhand's Chief Minister, now offers an alternative. The Kaddukhal–Siddhpeeth Devi ropeway operates year-round with seasonal adjustments: summer hours run 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, while winter hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Ropeway tickets cost approximately ₹110 for adults and ₹60 for children; children under five travel free. Tickets are sold only at the base counter—no online booking system exists. The traditional trek route remains open during daylight hours for those who prefer it or as a backup during weather disruptions.
Weather conditions affect ropeway operation; dense fog, rain, or high winds may cause temporary closures for safety. Visitors should confirm current conditions locally and be prepared to use the trek route if needed. The ropeway development has particularly benefited elderly pilgrims and families with young children, for whom the full trek previously posed significant difficulty.
Darshan and Daily Worship
The temple opens for darshan from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily, though some sources indicate a wider window of 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM—visitors should confirm exact hours locally before planning tight schedules. Two formal aartis structure the day: the morning aarti begins at 6:30 AM, and the evening aarti at 6:30 PM. These ritual moments, when the deity is honoured with light and sound, represent the primary occasions for collective worship at the shrine.
The relatively contained duration of a typical visit makes Surkanda Devi suitable for combining with other nearby attractions. Many travellers visit the temple in the morning, then spend the afternoon at Dhanaulti's Eco Park or exploring the surrounding hill station area.
Best Seasons and Weather
The optimal visiting period runs from October through March, when mountain weather is most stable and clear views of the Garhwal ranges are likely. Secondary good seasons occur from March to June and September to November, offering pleasant temperatures and lower rainfall. The high altitude means weather can change rapidly; visitors should carry layers and rain protection regardless of season. Winter months bring shorter daylight hours, reflected in the ropeway's adjusted 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule.
Practical Information for Visitors
Confirm all timings locally before arrival, as sources show some variation and schedules adjust seasonally. The temple is located at coordinates 30.411383, 78.2887. Kaddukhal village serves as the base point for both ropeway and trek access. Temples of the Shakti Peeth tradition typically expect modest dress—covered shoulders and knees are standard practice. Footwear is usually removed before entering the inner sanctum, though practices vary; observe what other devotees do upon arrival.
The high altitude (over 9,000 feet) may affect visitors unaccustomed to elevation; allow time to acclimatise if arriving directly from lower elevations. Bring water and any personal medications needed. The shrine itself is compact, and the visit typically requires one to two hours including the approach and time for worship.
Getting There
From Mussoorie, the temple lies approximately 24 kilometres away; from Dhanaulti, roughly 8 kilometres. Both are accessible by road, with Dhanaulti serving as the more direct jumping-off point. Local taxis and shared transport operate from these hill stations to Kaddukhal village. The nearest major transport hub is Dehradun, roughly 70 kilometres distant. Visitors should arrange transport to Kaddukhal in advance, particularly if arriving outside peak tourist seasons when shared services may be less frequent.
