Hori ki marhia group of temples, Thubon
About Hori ki marhia group of temples, Thubon
The Vishnu temple rests upon a jagati, an elevated platform that distinguishes it from ground level. The structure follows the mandapika style, characterized by a four-pillared pavilion (mandapa) that leads to the inner sanctum (garbhagriya). The sanctum's lintel displays Vishnu accompanied by Garuda, his celestial mount, positioned centrally on the lalatabimba (the decorative band above the doorway). Brahma and Shiva flank this central image, acknowledging the broader Hindu divine hierarchy.
The doorway to the sanctum contains extensive sculptural work. The Saptamatrikas—the seven mother goddesses—appear alongside Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Balarama, Krishna's elder brother, is also represented. Mithuna figures (amorous couples) and vyalas (mythological composite creatures) populate the decorative scheme. The goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, associated with sacred rivers, are carved into the doorway. Some relief work has deteriorated beyond clear identification, bearing witness to the temple's age.
The mandapa is surrounded on three sides by a kakshasana wall—a bench-like structure traditionally used for seating or for placing devotees' belongings. The outer walls of the temple feature additional reliefs depicting Vishnu in various forms, including Nri-Varaha (the anthropomorphic boar avatar), and scenes from the Gajendramoksha legend, which narrates the liberation of an elephant king. Representations of Ganesha, Agni (fire), Vayu (wind), and other deities complete the sculptural program. The original deity statue that once occupied the sanctum has been lost over time.
The Second Temple and the Site
A second mandapika-style temple also survives at the Hori ki Marhia group, though it is considerably simpler in design and decoration than the Vishnu temple. Little detailed information about this structure is currently available, but its presence indicates that the site once supported a more substantial religious complex. The survival of these two temples, despite the loss of others that formerly stood here, reflects both the durability of stone construction and the selective preservation efforts of archaeological authorities.
Visiting the Temple

Visitors should approach the temple with respect appropriate to a sacred Hindu space, even though the original deity statue is no longer present. Modest dress is advisable when visiting Hindu temples. Specific information regarding current visiting hours, facilities, or formal darshan arrangements is not documented in available sources; visitors are encouraged to make local inquiries upon arrival in Thubon or to contact the ASI office for the Gwalior division regarding access and any restrictions.
Understanding the Medieval Context
The mandapika style represented in these temples reflects architectural practices of medieval Hindu temple construction in central India. The emphasis on sculptural narrative—depicting divine forms, mythological episodes, and sacred iconography across doorways and outer walls—served both devotional and educational purposes. Such temples functioned as centers of worship while also communicating Hindu philosophical and mythological teachings through visual means to a largely non-literate population.
