The Dodda Ganapathi Temple is an ancient and revered shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha, whose name means 'Big Ganesha' in Kannada. The temple's centerpiece is a colossal monolithic idol approximately 18 feet high and 16 feet wide, believed to be self-manifested and carved from a single rock discovered by Kempe Gowda I during a hunting expedition. Worshipped as Vignaharta (remover of obstacles) and Buddhipratha (giver of intellect), the temple draws devotees year-round, with particularly large crowds during Ganesh Chaturthi. The temple is renowned for its unique Benne Alankara ritual, performed approximately every four years, where the idol is adorned with hundreds of kilograms of butter that remarkably does not melt despite the local climate. The temple complex is located in the historic Basavanagudi area and sits adjacent to the Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi), forming an important spiritual destination managed by the Department of Religious and Charitable Endowments, Government of Karnataka.
