Dodda Ganeshana Gudi
About Dodda Ganeshana Gudi
The temple was established in 1537 CE under the patronage of Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bengaluru. It stands as one of the city's foundational sacred sites, built around the same period as the nearby Bull Temple. The temple's longevity and continued prominence reflect its deep roots in the spiritual life of the region. Located in Basavanagudi, one of Bengaluru's oldest and culturally significant localities, the temple remains a living shrine that has served generations of pilgrims.
Dravidian Architecture and Design
The temple exemplifies Dravidian architectural style, with the shrine housing the monolithic Ganesha idol as its focal point. The broader temple complex features beautifully carved stone pillars and detailed stonework that contribute to its standing as an architectural landmark in the city. The serene environment created by these traditional design elements provides a contemplative setting for worship. The shrine's construction and ornamentation reflect the craftsmanship characteristic of South Indian temple building traditions.
Daily Rituals and Darshan Hours
The temple opens daily at 6:00 AM and remains accessible until 8:30 PM. Morning darshan runs from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM, while evening darshan operates from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The morning hours are considered the most peaceful time for worship. Several ritual services occur throughout the day: Suprabhata Seva begins at 6:00 AM, followed by the Pratah-kala Abhisheka at 6:30 AM. The Madhyahna Maha Mangalarathi takes place at noon, with Sandhya Aarti and Deeparadhana at 6:30 PM and Mangala Aarti at 8:00 PM. The temple is particularly known for its Benne Alankara—a butter decoration ritual applied to the deity. General darshan is entirely free, though archana tickets for special worship begin at ₹10–₹30 depending on the ritual chosen.
Visiting Practicalities
Wednesdays and Thursdays between 6:15 AM and 7:15 AM offer the shortest queues for darshan. The temple maintains a strict dress code requiring traditional or modest clothing: dhotis or trousers for men, sarees or salwars for women. Shorts and sleeveless garments are not permitted. Entry is completely free for general darshan, with no commercial VIP queue system. The temple is conveniently located opposite BMS College of Engineering on Bull Temple Road. National College Metro Station on the Green Line lies 1.4 km away, and the Bull Temple bus stop is just 40 metres from the entrance. Two-wheeler parking is available on nearby streets, while paid four-wheeler parking can be found at BMS College or Bugle Rock. A step-free side ramp provides accessibility for those with mobility needs.
Location and Nearby Attractions
The temple's position in Basavanagudi places it within reach of several other significant sites. The Bull Temple (Nandi Temple) stands directly opposite, making a combined visit natural for pilgrims. Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple, and Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace are all accessible from this central location. The neighbourhood itself carries historical weight as one of Bengaluru's oldest quarters, offering visitors a sense of the city's layered past.
