About Ganapathi Temple

Located on Bull Temple Road in Basavanagudi, Dodda Ganapathi Temple is renowned for its massive monolithic idol of Lord Ganesha carved from a single stone. The temple, also known as Shakthi Ganapathi and Satya Ganapathi, was established by Kempegowda I, the founder of Bangalore, who according to tradition discovered a stone with Ganesha's engraving during a walk and commissioned sculptors to carve the complete idol. The 18-foot-high, 16-foot-wide statue is believed to have grown to its present size on its own. The temple attracts devotees throughout the year and reaches peak activity during its week-long Ganesha festival, which features the spectacular Benne Alankara ritual where the idol is decorated with approximately 100 kilograms of butter, cream, golden laces, and buttons. Daily worship and evening rituals draw visitors seeking darshan and spiritual connection.
