About Durga Mandir

Located on Sankat Mochan road adjacent to Durga Kund in Varanasi, Durga Mandir stands as one of the city's most significant temples dedicated to Goddess Durga. Founded during the 18th century by Rani Bhabani of Natore, the temple is distinguished by its miraculous self-manifested idol, believed to have appeared without human craftsmanship as a divine manifestation of the goddess herself. The temple holds particular spiritual importance during Navratri, when devotees engage in elaborate aartis, devotional singing, and ritualistic worship. Visitors are advised to arrive during early morning or late evening hours to experience the temple's serene atmosphere while avoiding crowds. The sanctuary requires ascending a series of steps to reach the inner sanctum, with resting points provided along the way. The temple grounds are home to monkeys, which are considered part of the sacred environment, though visitors are encouraged to maintain respectful distance and avoid feeding them.
