Koipallikarazhma Devi Temple
About Koipallikarazhma Devi Temple
The most significant observance at this temple is Vishu Utsavam, which falls on the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam, typically in mid-April. The festival's preparations begin much earlier, around the third week of March, with a ritual called Parakkezhunnellethu. During this period, a replica of the Devi idol is carried in a palanquin-like structure known as a Jeevitha—constructed of timber and velvet and adorned with golden ornaments—in procession to Hindu households throughout Thalayar and surrounding villages. Devotees welcome the Devi with traditional offerings placed in a Para, a wooden measure, containing paddy, plantains, rice, and jaggery. This offering is called Parayideel. The procession itself extends over approximately twenty days, bringing the festival's energy across the local landscape before the main celebration arrives.
Navaratri and Kettukazhcha Observances
Navaratri, the nine-night festival dedicated to Goddess Devi in her various forms, is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Kanni, typically in September or October. The observance involves special prayers, chanting, and devotional activities intended to invoke the goddess's blessings. Beyond these two major festivals, the temple marks the Revathi day of the Meenam month with Kettukazhcha Mahotsav, regarded as the goddess's most cherished festival. Kettukazhcha—elaborate, towering structures—are constructed and hoisted by the karakkar (temple custodians) after a week of preparation. These structures arrive at the temple accompanied by theevetti, thalapoli, and chenda melam (traditional percussion music). Smaller Kettukazhcha crafted by child devotees also participate in the festivities. Additionally, the Shiva temple within the premises hosts an annual bull festival on Shivaratri, honoring Nandi, the vehicle of Shiva.

The Shiva Temple and Annual Observances
The Shiva temple situated within the temple grounds holds independent significance. Each year, an eight-day festival commences on the first day of the Kumbham month, observed on both sides of the main temple. The Anpoli festivals, organized separately by individual karakkar families, are central to this observance. The bull festival held on Shivaratri at the Shiva shrine represents another important annual event, honoring Nandi through traditional celebration.
