Basukedar Temple stands as a revered sanctuary devoted to Lord Shiva, situated in the village of Basukedar within Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand. The temple complex encompasses the main shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva along with approximately 25 smaller temples honoring various deities. According to Hindu tradition, the Pandavas built this temple after the Mahabharata war to seek Lord Shiva's blessings and absolution from their sins. Legend recounts that when the Pandavas encountered Lord Shiva in his buffalo form at this location, the deity disappeared in anger and proceeded to Kedarnath. The name Basukedar derives from another tradition suggesting that Lord Shiva rested here overnight while returning to Kedarnath. The temple occupies a spiritually significant position on the ancient route to Kedarnath, serving as an important waypoint for pilgrims and devotees undertaking the sacred journey to the higher Himalayan shrine.
